Joost Jongerden


Joost Jongerden is project professor at the Asian Platform for Global Sustainability & Transcultural Studies at Kyoto University in Japan and assistant professor at the Sociology and Anthropology of Development Sub-Department of Wageningen University (SADE), the Netherlands.

Areas of specialization 

He is interested in the intersection of people, power and politics, which he studies in the contexts of development, conflict and self-organization - the latter defined in the many ways in which people try to establish themselves vis-a-vis state and market. His main research areas of interest are Kurdistan, Turkey and the Middle East.
